Rawlo Kastner

Rawlo Louis Kastner was born in rural Denison, Iowa, on October 9, 1930. His parents were Gilbert and Rose (Schug) Kastner. He was baptized as an infant at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church by Rev. Kielhorn on November 23, 1930, and confirmed by Rev. A.F. Rinne on March 25, 1945. He was a lifetime member of the United Church of Christ where he served on the church council and other committees.
He received his education in rural school Hanover #1 and graduated from Schleswig High School in 1948. After graduation, Rawlo worked for various farmers and Farmers Lumber and Grain. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in February 1951 and went to active duty in August 1953. He was sent to electrical school in San Diego and was later assigned to the carrier, USS Hancock, where he serviced dial phones. He was discharged in July 1955.
On June 7, 1953, Rawlo was united in marriage to Rubie Pickel at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. To this union two children were born, Regina and Ross. They lived in San Diego and Bremerton, Washington, until Rawlos discharge. They moved on the farm north of Schleswig and farmed there from 1956 to 1996. They built a home in Schleswig in 1982 when Rawlo began his insurance career at Schinco Insurance. In 1986 he worked for Farmers Mutual Insurance Association until retiring in 2001.
Rawlo served on the Board of Directors of Farmers Lumber and Grain, Farmers State Bank, and Farmers Mutual Insurance Association. He was an active member of the Community Club, American Legion, VFW Post 3930, and longtime member of the Color Guard.
Rawlo enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, and golfing, especially Monday senior golf which he began in 1983.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Rubie; one son, Ross and his wife, Terri; one daughter, Regina and her husband, Bruce; six grandchildren; Rhiannon and Brandon; Tiff; Kayla, Krissy, and Tanner; and Jeremy; three great-grandchildren; Kaylin, Adalyn and Ashlynn; one brother, Verdell and his wife, Marlyn; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ben; Gene & Evie Stamm; Betty Pickel; Allen and Bev; Larry and Dorothy Rix; other relatives and friends.
