Raymond D. Kolln

September 16, 1924 — February 26, 2017

Raymond D. Kolln was born September 16, 1924, at rural Westside, Iowa, the son of John and Edith Kolln. He died Sunday, February 26, 2017, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-two.
Ray received his education in the rural schools near his home and at the Dow City High School. On his birthday, September 16, 1949, Ray was united in marriage to Melba Winsor at the Methodist Church in Denison with Rev. Stanley Krutzwich officiating. They were blessed with the birth of four children and sixty-seven years of marriage. Ray was employed as a truck driver, working for Russ Clark at Farmers Elevator Mill, for Louis Ahart and for Farmland Foods for twenty-three years. He later was employed at Clark Ready Mix.
He loved animals and dogs, raised exotic animals including peacocks, racoons, foxes, donkeys and ponies and attended the exotic animal shows. He had a furbearing license and game breeders license. He liked John Deere tractors, enjoyed vegetable gardening, going to the sale barn, and was a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Greenbay Packers. He met his wife, Melba at the skating rink and he was a beautiful and graceful skater as well as dancing on skates. Dancing was a favorite activity of his as for forty years, every Saturday night, he and Melba went dancing to the music of The Messengers and Whiskey River. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Monica on January 17, 1979; and three brothers, Ernie, Eldon and Arnold. Survivors include: his wife, Melba; one son, Lonny; two daughters; Myrna and special friend, Dan; and Jeanie and special friend Kevin; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; five sisters: Louise; Leola; Loraine; Louine; and Lillian; other relatives and friends.
