Richard E. Hallowell

March 22, 1930 — February 12, 2016

Richard Eugene Hallowell, the son of Joseph and Daisy Glassburner Hallowell, was born in the family farm house just outside Dow City, Iowa, on March 22, 1930. On February 12, 2016, he passed away with his son at his side at the Golden Years and More assisted living home in Manassas, Virginia.
Richard, the youngest of seven brothers and sisters, attended the Dow City Consolidated Schools until March of his freshman year, when he moved with his parents and sister Frances to Jefferson, Iowa. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1948 and attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, until 1953. In January 1954, he entered the United States Air Force and, after initial training, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant as a Navigator on April 7, 1955.
On July 10, 1955, Richard was united in marriage to Helen Lorraine Thrailkill at the First Methodist Church Chapel of Harlingen, Texas. They had one son, Gary Michael. Richard, Helen, and Gary spent the next 20 years traveling the world while he served in the United States Air Force and ended up in the Northern Virginia area.
Following his years with the Air Force, Richard worked another three years in Washington, DC, for the Federal Communications Commission. In the spring of 1977, he and his wife Helen moved out west to build their retirement home near Monument, Colorado. He and Helen lived in Colorado for the next 18 years until the warmer weather of Arizona beckoned. They moved to Mesa, Arizona, in the spring of 1995. He and Helen enjoyed the rest of their retirement there until her passing in January 2009. Richard remained in the greater Phoenix area until the summer of 2014 when he moved back east to Virginia to be close to his son and family.
Richard is survived by his son Gary (and wife Cindy), granddaughter Melissa (and husband John), granddaughter Kathleen, and great grandson Aubrey. He was preceded in death by his parents and each of his siblings: Mamie Helen, Ada Lois, Don Joseph, Ruth Elizabeth, Marcia Janet, and Frances Lorraine.
