Richard Hoffman

Richard John Hoffman was born December 20, 1930, the son of Peter and Ann Snyder Hoffman. He passed away Sunday, November 21, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of seventy-nine.
Richard was born in Vail, Iowa. He received his elementary and high school education at St. Anns Catholic School in Vail, graduating with the class of 1949. From January 1952 to January 1954 he served in the U.S. Army Reserves and received an Army Occupational Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He then returned home to farm with his father.
On October 1, 1955, he was united in marriage to Charlene Ruch by Fr. Clark at St. Anns Catholic Church in Vail. The couple settled on the family farm in Vail where they have continued to live until the present time. They were blessed with the birth of four children. For many years he continued farming with his father, brother, Ambrose, and son, Dennis.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed socializing with family and friends, and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren. As an avid sports fan, he would make time to attend his grandchildrens sporting events. Farming was his life. He enjoyed working on the farm, raising cattle, driving tractor, working with equipment and taking care of the yard. He was a member of St. Anns Catholic Church in Vail.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Ambrose Hoffman; Raymond Hoffman; and Richard and his wife, Charlene. Survivors include his wife, Charlene of 55 years, of Vail; two sons: Dennis Hoffman and his wife, Sharon; and Mark Hoffman and his wife, Kristi all of Vail; two daughters: Lisa Stoelk and her husband, Scot of Westside, Iowa; and Joni Hawley and her husband, Theodore of Missouri Valley, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; four great_grandchildren; two sisters: Dolores Pokorny of Sabetha, Kansas; and Shirley Ann Mattes of Carroll, Iowa; one brother, Ralph Hoffman and his wife, Doris of Merlin, Oregon; other relatives and many friends.
