Ricky Dean Lahr was born February 17, 1954, the son of Dean and Ellen Wolfe Lahr. He died Thursday, June 16, 2016 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of sixty-two.
Rick was born in Denison but grew up in Dow City. He received his education at Dow City Schools where he was active in sports and the president of the student council. He enjoyed playing football his junior and senior year and was a star athlete. He graduated from Dow City Community High School in 1972. On September 21, 1973, Rick was united in marriage to Janet Reincke at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dow City. They were blessed with the birth of two daughters. For a short time he lived in Kansas and worked for his uncle at a packing plant. On April 4, 1986, Rick was united in marriage to Patty Kloewer at the Methodist Church in Dow City. The couple was blessed with the birth of three sons. He continued to work at Denison Farmland for more than 30 years before retiring in 2011. When he was young, Rick appreciated farming with his father and once he retired he farmed with his good friend, Denny Topf.
He remained active and enjoyed meaningful and fulfilling work. Rick always had a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and his work ethic was of the highest character. He looked forward to getting back to work, even after his chemotherapy. He loved working outside, which included mowing lawns, landscaping, and some carpentry. He started Lahr and Sons Lawn and Landscaping, a business he operated for several years. He was proud and comfortable with who he was and took care of himself. In his leisure time, he enjoyed going for motorcycle rides on his Harley, attending NASCAR races, and watching action, western and sports themed movies. He took pleasure in attending many sporting events. Most of all, he loved his children and grandchildren. He was a loving son, brother, father, and grandfather.
Rick was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include two daughters: Amy Kolln and her husband, Jason, and Christal Peterson and her husband, Tyler, all of Ankeny, Iowa; three sons: Kelly Lahr and his wife, Whitney, of Charter Oak, Charlie Lahr of Odebolt, Patrick Lahr and Kayla Krohnke of Schleswig; four grandchildren: Kora and Leyton Kolln, Nash Peterson, and Lane Lahr; his mother Ellen of Dow City; three brothers: Chuck Lahr of Dow City, Jesse Lahr and his wife, Doreen, of Gravios Mills, Missouri, and Dale Lahr of Denison; and other relatives and many friends.
