Robert Frederick DeMey was born June 29, 1949, the son of Robert J. and Gwenith Brink De Mey. He died Monday, February 21, 2011, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa, at the age of sixty-one.
Robert was born in Denison, Iowa, and grew up and received his education at the Dow City Community Schools. He entered the military service in 1969, completing basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, and then was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, before being sent to Vietnam in 1970. There he served with the 150th Mechanized Infantry as a gunner on both tanks and helicopters while in combat, arriving home in 1971. He worked on construction, farmed with area farmers until 1994, then began working at Gomaco in Ida Grove until 1999. After leaving Gomaco, he became self-employed welding trailers.
He was an avid outdoorsman, loving to fish and hunt with his dogs, Katie and Casey. Vegetable gardening and working in his shop were other outdoor activities that kept Robert busy. He had a talent for making things out of what he found as he searched through scrap yards. After he became ill, he enjoyed watching TV and listening to country music.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Joseph DeMey. Survivors include his dear friend and long-time companion, Betty of Ida Grove; mother, Gwenith and dear friend Orville; two sisters: Judith and her husband, Pete; and Jodi and her husband, Mark; two nephews: Matt and Kaylaand children, Gage and Kambri; Jered and Amy and son, Drew; one niece, Megan and her husband Dan, and children Tate and Denver; other relatives and friends.
