Robert L. Wilson

June 23, 1930 — March 2, 2017

Robert Lee Wilson was born June 23, 1930 in Beebeetown, Iowa, the son of Ora and Dora Wilson. Surrounded by the love of his entire family, he passed away peacefully on Thursday March 2nd, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Council Bluffs Iowa, at the age of eighty-six.
Robert was baptized in Missouri Valley, Iowa. He was confirmed and received his education in Wall Lake Iowa. After receiving his education he worked at the Lake View Tile Plant until entering the United State Navy. Robert was proud of the time he served in the Navy and enjoyed telling his children and grandchildren stories of those years. He especially enjoyed sharing his memories of crossing the equator on a world cruise and traveling around the world.
On October 27, 1957, he was united in marriage to Shelly Hixon in South Sioux City, Nebraska. They were blessed with four children and made their lifetime home in Denison, Iowa. He was employed at Iowa Beef Processors for thirty-three years, retiring in 1993. Robert was known as ‘Gov’ or ‘The Governor’ to many of his lifetime friends, being nick named after a Governor of Iowa with the last name Wilson.
Robert was a handyman, who could do a little of everything. He was the family mechanic, the family ‘go to’ and ‘call dad/grandpa first’ that everyone depended on. He was the rock of his family, a loving, devoted husband, father, and grandfather. But he would still today, tell you to “ask mother”. He enjoyed working in his garden, playing cards, and being the jokester with his family and friends. In his younger years, he enjoyed rabbit and pheasant hunting, mushroom hunting, fishing with his boys, and was an umpire for the Little League. He was a big sports fan. He loved his Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Browns fan, and attended Boston Red Sox games while in the Navy. In his later years until the present, come 6:30 pm, he was winning at the Wheel of Fortune.
Robert had a strong Christian faith. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. He was very devoted to his church and enjoyed many hours of fellowship helping with church projects. He and Shelly have been their church custodians for many years. When Robert’s life style became more limited in 2010, he still remained the happy positive man we all knew and loved spending time with. He cherished every moment, laugh, and hug he shared with those he loved until God brought him home.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Shelly, two sons; Tim; and Robert and his wife Brenda; two daughters; Connie and her husband, Lonnie, and Laurie and her husband Dave; 9 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Max, who died as a child, and one sister Hazel and her husband, Harold.
