Roger Dale Houston was born August 16, 1941, fifteenth in line of twenty children born to Ben (George) Houston and Laura Houston. He passed away Saturday, January 18, 2020, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of seventy-eight.
Roger attended Dow City School, served his country in the United States Army for four years and was employed at Iowa Beef Processors for ten years. He then drove a semi for five years and bought a bar which he turned into a steak house for ten years. After selling the bar, Roger went back to driving truck with his wife, Helen, for over twenty years, retiring in 2008.
Roger was united in marriage to Helen Marie Berens of Dunlap, Iowa, June 15, 1963. They were blessed with two children, Joseph Dale and Kathleen Marie. Joseph married Lori Lutz of Denison and Kathleen married Tom Hofmann of San Diego, California. Kathy died on December 3, 2017, after a long battle with breast cancer.
Roger thought his greatest accomplishment in life was his children, grandkids and great-grandkids. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and going to Yuma, Arizona, during the winters. When he retired, he thought he had to go to Ace’s every morning at 5 a.m. for coffee with the guys and, of course, gossip.
Preceding Roger in death were his parents; seventeen of his brothers and sisters; and daughter, Kathleen. Survivors include: his son, Joe and his wife, Lori; son-in-law, Tom; four grandchildren, Zachary, Daniel and wife, Raquel, Vanessa and wife, Sara, and April and husband, Maxwell; seven great-grandchildren, Gavin, James, Luke, Colby, Alyssa, Duncan and Nora; brother, Ken and his wife, Rita; sister, Helen; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
