Ruth E. (Lage) Schroeder was born at the family farm home near Arcadia, Iowa, on February 26, 1918, the daughter of Jacob and Emma Lage. She passed away Monday, February 26, 2018, on her one-hundredth birthday, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa.
Ruth was baptized in Christ and later confirmed her faith April 9, 1933, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. She received her education at Manning, graduating from Manning High School in May of 1935. She was employed at Marten’s Variety Store until moving to California in the winter of 1936. While there, she attended business college and was employed by the Bank of America and Personal Finance Company.
On April 3, 1941, she was united in marriage to Merlin J. Schroeder and they were blessed with the birth of one daughter, Judith Ann. She lived with her parents until Merlin was discharged from the service on January 25, 1946. They were engaged in farming at the family farm. After moving to Denison in January of 1960, Ruth was employed at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital for over twenty-three years, serving as assistant to the administrator, retiring on March 1, 1983. Ruth and Merlin enjoyed wintering in Arizona for many years near their family. When traveling between Iowa and Arizona became difficult, Ruth moved into Realife and then to Eventide in Denison, Iowa, where she enjoyed attending bible study, playing bingo and visits from extended family members.
Ruth was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison. She served as a braille transcriber for over 38 years transcribing junior bible lessons. She was a devoted wife and mother enjoying time spent with her family.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Emma; husband, Merlin; two sisters, Ina and her husband, Lyle, and Hazel and her husband, Fred; one brother, Glen and his wife, Maxine; in-laws, Johannes and Clara, Vernon and Sophie, Wilber and Gertrude, Leonard and Gertie, George and Bernice and Wayne and Phyllis. Survivors include: her daughter, Judith and her husband, Larry; three grandchildren, Craig and his wife, Paula and Timothy, and Dawn and her husband, Eric; eight great-grandchildren, Andrea, Allison, Austin, Andrew, Alex, Preston, Ryanna and Zachariah; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; other relatives and friends.
