Ruth Lillian Schmidt was born January 2, 1929, the daughter of William and Gertrude Schneider Asmus. She passed away November 1, 2011, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa, at the age of eighty-two.
Ruth was born in Denison, Iowa, and was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. She received her education in rural country school near her home. She was united in marriage to Virgil Schmidt at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, on May 9, 1948. The couple settled on Virgils home farm and was blessed with the birth of three children. She was a homemaker and worked on the farm, raising chickens, ducks, and geese, and kept detailed records for the family.
Ruth loved to cook meals and bake goodies, referring to it as good therapy. She cherished her family and looked forward to the tea parties with her grandchildren. Socializing with friends and dancing to polkas and waltzes were some of her favorite pastimes. The annual July 4th celebration was always a good time, getting together with the same group of family and friends since 1947. She was fond of her favorite dog, Frank, and also enjoyed bird watching.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Virgil in 2008; two sisters, Laverle (Bobbie) and Dorothy; two brothers, Charles and Billie; and one sister-in-law, Virginia. Survivors include: one daughter, Janie and her husband, Walt; two sons: Jim and his wife, Jean; and Joel and his wife, Holly; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters: Marge; Marilyn and her husband, Leonard; Shirley; Kathy; two brothers-in-law, Wesley; and Robert; other relatives and friends.
