Sheila Verene King was born March 2, 1934, in Milford, Nebraska, the daughter of Norman and Grace Vian. She passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-five.
After completing her elementary and high school education, she attended Chadron State College for two years. She was united in marriage to Victor Schmeichel on August 20, 1950. Sheila taught at a rural school in Brownlee, Nebraska. After teaching for several years, she chose to stay home and raise her daughters while living in Thedford, Nebraska. Later she and her husband, Victor owned and operated a Laundromat in O’Neill, Nebraska. They also managed hotel operations in Aurora and O’Neill, Nebraska. After Victor’s death she worked as a desk clerk at a motel in Grand Island, Nebraska. There she met and married Ray King. She and Ray moved to Defiance, Iowa, where she worked at the Hy-Vee Deli and Country Store in Defiance.
She attended the United Methodist Church in Defiance, Iowa. Sheila quilted at the church for several years. Her hobbies included quilting, playing cards, puzzles and going out to eat. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and watching her great-grandchildren play.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Victor and Ray; one great-grandchild; son-in-law, Warren; four sisters: Grace, Echo, Eva and Edna; and two brothers, Norman and Albert. Survivors include: two daughters, Linda and Wayne, and Beverly; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tom, and Don and his wife, Ann; other relatives and many friends.
