Sherman Lee Higginbottom was born the son of Wesley and Doris R. Higginbottom on October 18, 1947. He died on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at his home in Deloit, Iowa, at the age of sixty-nine.
Sherman was born in Talihina, Oklahoma, and grew up between there and Bakersfield, California. At the age of seventeen, he joined the United States Army on February 18, 1965, and took his Basic Training in Ft. Polk, Louisiana. He went to AIT School in Ft. Gordon, Georgia (81 mm mortars) and also attended jump school for three weeks. Sherman served in the Vietnam War and made 200 aerial assault missions, was a paratrooper and light weapons infantryman. He received his honorable discharge July 25, 1968. He was awarded several medals including the Purple Heart, National Defense Service, Air Medal, Parachute Badge, Expert Badge with rifle bar and Sharp Shooter Badge.
On January 12, 1991, he was united in marriage to Susan Fae Wulf and they made their home in Deloit. Sherman enjoyed gambling at casinos and working on small engines. He was also known as the Bubble Gum Man, because he handed out bubble gum and suckers to all, young and old.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and two nieces. Survivors include: his wife, Susan; one son, Brian and his wife, Jenelle; two stepsons, Eric and Ed and his wife, Tracy; one granddaughter, Emma; one brother, Douglas and his wife, Glenna; one sister, Shirley;a special little friend, Savanna (Peanut Butter); a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
