Sheryl Lynn Thomsen was born on January 7, 1958, the daughter of Thomas and Irene (Brensel) Thomsen in Denison, Iowa. She was baptized and later confirmed her faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City. Sheryl graduated from Dow City-Arion High School. She went on to Morningside College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education.
Throughout her illustrious career, Sheryl served as an elementary and secondary school librarian and teacher in various locations such as Olin, Iowa, and Tohatchi, New Mexico. With endorsements in psychology and speech communications theater, she brought a unique perspective to her work and inspired countless students along the way. Her first love was theater and one of Sheryl's greatest joys came from her time at the Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, where she worked as a secretary and coordinator. She witnessed the growth and success of students firsthand. As a forensics coach, she watched them receive first place honors three times and third place once in the national championship. Sheryl loved her students and always made sure they were treated fairly. Her impact extended beyond the classroom as she also devoted part of her time to serving as a Girl Scouts Leader, nurturing the leaders of tomorrow.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Sheryl found solace in traveling with friends to various destinations around the globe. From the landscapes of Northern Europe to the tropical paradise of Hawaii, from the vibrant streets of San Francisco to the rolling hills of Tennessee and Kentucky, she embraced every adventure with open arms. Sheryl found happiness in baking and loved making banana bread and cookies for her students and coworkers. Sheryl's warm and uplifting spirit endeared her to many, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be fondly remembered for her hardworking nature, infectious joy, and unwavering dedication to making a difference in the lives of those around her.
Sheryl passed away at her home in Council Bluffs on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the age of 66 years, four months and 30 days.
Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: William “Bill” Thomsen and Larry Thomsen. She is survived by her sister, Karen Thomsen of Cherokee; two brothers: John Thomsen of Dow City and Jerry Thomsen of Winchester, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Lory Thomsen of Denison; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation with family greeting friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Her memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. also at the Huebner Funeral Home on Thursday, June 13, 2024, inurnment will be held in the Dow City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.
