Shirley Hollrah

Shirley Faye Hollrah was born February 9, 1937, the daughter of August and Emma Nollen Hast. She passed away at her home, while in Hospice care, in Fairfield, Iowa, on Monday, April 11, 2011, at the age of seventy-four.
She was born in Arion, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, Iowa, on June 13, 1937, and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, Iowa. She received her education at the Vail Community Schools and worked as a waitress in Denison, Iowa, after high school. She was united in married to Kenneth Hollrah on April 14, 1956, in Carroll, Iowa, making their first home in Dunlap, Iowa. The couple was blessed with the birth of four sons. They lived in Potter, Nebraska; Rapid City, South Dakota; Atkins, Iowa; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Phoenix, Arizona; settling in Chadron, Nebraska, where they owned and operated a convenience store near Chadron State Park. Shirley moved to Fairfield in August 2010.
She loved nature, observing the birds and squirrels, working out in her vegetable and flower gardens, and fishing. She enjoyed country western music, especially when her husband would play his guitar. Favorite TV programs included The Nature and Hallmark Channels, movies, and game shows. She was a loving mother and grandmother, with a very special place in her heart for her grandchildren. She was a hard worker and endured many hardships in her life, giving her a deep faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth in 2003; two granddaughters, Sara and Nisa; four brothers: Gayle in infancy; Virgil (Bud); August, Jr.; and Vernon. She is survived by four sons: Jerry and his wife, Cheryl; Rynn and his wife, Toni; Kim and his wife, Melissa; and Rick; ten grandchildren; three sisters: Phyllis (Molly and her husband, Norman; Doris and her husband, Arnold; Betty and her husband, Keith; three sisters-in-law: Darlene, Delores, and Ferne; other relatives and friends.
