Stella Behnke was born January 11, 1928, in Hamburg-Eidelstedt Germany, the daughter of Albert and Marie Behrmann. She passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Delmar Gardens - West in St Louis, Missouri, at the age of eighty-nine.
Stella was baptized in Christ on June 3, 1928, and confirmed on March 29, 1942, in Church of Eidelstedt in Hamburg. On May 12, 1951, she married Karl-Heinz Behnke and in 1952, she and her husband, leaving family and friends, immigrated to the United States, settled in Schleswig Iowa and started a new life.
Stella was devoted to her church and provided support to a number of local organizations. She loved to be outside working in her yard, planting flowers and tending her garden. She was a wonderful cook known for her beef rouladen, homemade coffee cakes, and rye bread. She also enjoyed playing cards, golf, antiques, needle point and crochet. Most of all she enjoyed her family and in particular her two grandchildren. She will be remembered by family and friends for her personality, sense of humor and kindness and as a care giver to her husband in his later years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Heinz; and one brother, Wilhelm (Willy). Survivors include: her son, Boyd and his wife, Nancy; two grandchildren, Karl and Lindsay, Lindsay’s husband Eddie and their children - Nathan, Ashley and Gabby; and other relatives and friends both here and in Germany.
