Verla M Kluender

Verla Marie Kluender was born November 24, 1926, the daughter of Ernest and Lilly Felten Sump. She died Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-nine.
Verla grew up on a farm near Peterson, Iowa, where she was born and received her education in the Calumet Community High School, graduating with the class of 1946. She acquired the nick name “Toots” from her parents at a young age. On August 6, 1946, she was united in marriage to Raymond Kluender at the Methodist Parsonage in Cherokee, Iowa. The couple was blessed with the birth of five children. The family first made their home in Sioux City where Ray worked at Sioux Tools. In 1949, the couple moved to Sutherland, Iowa where Ray worked for the Sutherland Creamery. In 1953, Ray took a position with the Iowa State Patrol in Cherokee and in 1956, the family moved to Denison where Ray was stationed as a State Trooper. For a few years in the early 60's Verla worked at Foxies Super Value Grocery Store in Denison before taking a position with the Denison Community Schools as a teachers' associate, a career that lasted nearly twenty years.
In her leisure time, Verla enjoyed her family and devoted her entire life to them as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Playing cards with her family, and friends at the Senior Center. She was devoted to her Lord and Savior as a strong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was a member of the Zion’s Evening Guild. She reared her children with the faith she knew was necessary as the strength she had as a Christian. She was a fabulous cook, seamstress and enjoyed crocheting. She enjoyed caring for her vegetable garden and eating a fresh tomato right off the vine. She was a member of the Twins Club, a gathering of mothers of twins. After retirement, Verla and Ray wintered in Arizona and the couple often went to the Chicago Cubs spring practice games. One of her most rememberable events of her life was the time Kyle and his family took Ray and her to Chicago to see the Chicago Cubs play.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ray, one daughter, Linda Brodersen, one granddaughter, Rebecka Kluender, one grandson, Aaron Brodersen and three brothers, Marvin, Dale, and Richard(Dick). Survivors include: four sons: Ron Kluender and his wife, Judy of Osceola, Iowa; Troy Kluender and his wife, Kristi of Schleswig, Iowa; Kyle Kluender and his wife, Michelle of Humboldt, Iowa and Karl Kluender and his wife, Pamela of Huxley, Iowa; one son-in-law, Larry Brodersen of Charter Oak, Iowa; twelve grandchildren: Tim (Sherry) Kluender and Amy (Mark) Miller; and Brian Brodersen; Trey and Jaci Kluender; Nathan, Amber, Landon and Brayden Kluender; Bethany, Morgan and Alexis Kluender; four great-grandchildren: Carter and Cambri Brodersen; Garrett Tasler and Tayla Brodersen; one granddaughter-in-law Tani Brodersen of Charter Oak; two sisters; Sharon Wadsley of Spencer and Sandy(Ronnie) Wetherell of Cleghorn,, one brother-in-law, Albert Kluender of Arizona; many other relatives and friends.
