Vernet Magdalene, the oldest daughter of Chris and Lena Neddermeyer was born April 18, 1927 at Charter Oak, Iowa. She passed away Friday, May 19, 2017, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 90. She was baptized May 8, 1927 and confirmed April 6, 1941 by Rev. Schroeder at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Vernet attended St. John’s Lutheran School and then Charter Oak High School for 2 years, then helped her Dad in the grocery store, and enjoyed working at the Farmers State Bank for 7 years.
She married Ralph “Brownie” Larson June 20, 1948 and they were blessed with two daughters, Jeri Lynn and Patti Jo. Together they farmed south of Charter Oak for 7 years and then purchased Butler Grocery which they operated for 9 years. Larson Grocery was then sold to Kenneth Schau. Brownie then became an insurance agent with Minnesota Life and Vernet enjoyed working with him for 22 years.
Vernet was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was very active in her church. She taught Sunday School for 20 years, member of Ladies Aid, Altar Guild, Lamplighters, Quilters, 12 Plus Bible Class, and was a strong supporter of St. John’s Lutheran School and PTL.
Her community service included Charter Oak Commercial Club, Clubettes, Meals on Wheels, Community Club, Historical Club, and she served 4 years on the Town Council. She was named Citizen of the Year in 2004. Vernet also volunteered at Eventide and was a member of the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brownie, in 1995; her parents; her brother, Chris; her sisters, Marlene and Nancy; sister-in-law, Verdean Neddermeyer; brothers-in-law, Robert Hawley, Richard Butler, Ed Kuhlmann and Mel Berka; sons-in-laws, Myron Kolpin and Joseph Peters.
Vernet is survived by her two daughters, Jeri and Pat ; grandchildren, Eric (Jamie) Loehr, Emily (Adam), and Evan (Mariana); two great-granddaughters, Natalie and Olivia , and a great-grandson, Mason; sisters, Lois and Norma; sisters-in-law, Ruth and Donna; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Vernet was always willing to give of her time and talents; and she has always said, “I love my family, I love my church and I love my town”.
