Vernon Christian Carl Bielow was born May 30, 1921, the son of Herman and Olga Hopp Bielow. He died Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety.
Vernon was born on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on June 26, 1921, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, and later confirmed there on April 14, 1935. He received his education in country school near his home and then St. Paul Lutheran School in Hanover Township. After completing his education he worked in the feed and produce business for Roy H. Smith, in Ricketts, Iowa, which was later moved to Charter Oak. He entered the United States Army on September 6, 1943. On April 2, 1945, Vernon was united in marriage to Evelyn Hinrichsen at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. The couple made their home in Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of one daughter.
Vernon was called overseas, serving in Eastern Asia, China, India, and Burma. He received his honorable discharge on November 6, 1945. He returned to Charter Oak and purchased the feed and produce business from Roy Smith and it became Bielow??s Produce. In 1986, Vernon dropped the produce line from his business and changed the name to Bielow??s Feed and Supply. Vernon and Evelyn operated the business for nearly thirty years, selling it in 1977. He also sold Golden Sun and Murphy Feeds and hog equipment and delivered feed and supplies to the customers upon request. Vernon also worked for the United States Postal Service for thirty-five plus years.
He enjoyed visiting and telling jokes. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and actively participated in the Charter Oak Community Club, Commercial Club and the American Legion.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Evelyn in 1973; his daughter Jenell in 1999; one grandson Jeremy; and one sister, Ruth and her husband, Vernon. Survivors include his son-in-law, Jerry; two granddaughters, Jennifer and her husband, Tim; Jessica; seven great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
