On July 28, 1956, Vernon was united in marriage to Diann Petersen at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa, by Rev. Wiese. The couple made their home in Ricketts in the house that Vernon built and they were blessed with the birth of six children.
He farmed in 1956-57; drove a gravel truck in 1958-59; owned and operated a milk route from 1960-71, at the same time also hauling livestock.
