Vi Mahoney

Wilma Viola Mahoney was born April 27, 1924, the daughter of John and Eva Grundy Lewis. She died Sunday, January 31, 2010, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-five.
Vi was born in Neola, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on March 29, 1956, at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church, now the United Church of Christ, in Schleswig, Iowa. She attended school in Missouri Valley, Iowa, and graduated from Missouri Valley High School with the class of 1942.
On November 7, 1942, she was united in marriage to Paul Mahoney in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children. They moved to Schleswig from Pisgah, Iowa, in 1950. Vi worked as a bookkeeper for Schleswig Transfer, the family trucking business, with her husband until his death in 1971. She worked at various other jobs, including being a manager at the Schleswig Golf Course and janitor at the United Church of Christ. Schleswig was always home to her even though she moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Denison in recent years. She resided at Eventide Lutheran Home since April 2009.
She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always enjoyed meeting new people. Some of her favorite activities included flower gardening, listening to big band music, bowling and fishing, in earlier years. She also enjoyed watching birds, especially cardinals.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; her son, Richard; one brother-in-law, Jim Buffum; and one sister-in-law, Helen Lewis. Survivors include two daughters: Phyllis Clausen and her husband, Leon of Schleswig; Lois Mahoney of Onawa, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Marge Scott and her husband, Jerry of Missouri Valley; Norma Buffum; and Jane Ann Christiansen and her husband, Lloyd, all of Council Bluffs; four brothers: Kenneth Lewis and his wife, Diane of Council Bluffs; John Lewis of Neola; Larry Lewis and his wife, Cece of Council Bluffs; and Dennis Lewis and his wife, Dena of Underwood, Iowa; her aunt, Alice Martinez and her husband, Marty of Council Bluffs; many other relatives and friends.
