Virginia Powell

Virginia Claire Powell was born June 9, 1920, the daughter of Alfred and Hazel Aebischer Richards. She passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, Iowa, at the age of 92.
Virginia was born in Denison, Iowa. She graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1938 and attended the University of Northern Iowa for a year after graduation, then returned home to help her mother. She worked at Commercial State Bank and 1st National Bank in Denison. Virginia was united in marriage to Cecil (Jack) Powell on February 8, 1943, and to this union was born one son, Richard.
Virginia was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison where she was actively involved and sang in the choir. During the summer she liked to cook at the Presbyterian church camp at Lake Okoboji in Milford, Iowa. Virginia enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, and being outdoors. She and Cecil built a summer home on Loon Lake in northwest Wisconsin where they spent time fishing and relaxing. Virginia was a Donna Reed and huge Nebraska Cornhusker fan and admired longtime coach Tom Osborne. She loved dogs, especially cocker spaniels. Virginia also enjoyed going golfing and was nicknamed Putsy.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil in 1978; and her son, Richard in 2006. Survivors include two grandchildren, Michael Powell of Alexandria, Minnesota; and Anne Bierman of Breda, Iowa; and four great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
