Walter J. Poggensee

January 19, 1932 — September 8, 2017

Walter Poggensee was born January 19th, 1932, in Denison, Iowa, to the late Herman and Elsie (Thies) . He passed away Friday, September 8, 2017, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-five. He was baptized, confirmed and married in Zion Lutheran Church. He attended Denison Community Schools and graduated in 1950. Walter proudly served his country as a Sgt. of artillery during the Korean conflict. After the war, Walter returned to Denison and began working for the Iowa Department of Transportation. Walter married Florence Klink on April 16, 1961. The marriage was blessed with three children. Walter retired from the DOT after 39 years of service. Walter and Florence moved to rural Vail after the flood of 1993 took their home in Denison. Walter began working as a maintenance man at Yellowsmoke park and other odd jobs for several years after his retirement.
Walter was a dedicated family man, who loved to spend time with family and friends. Family reunions and dinners with friends were very important to him. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Many hours were spent with the grandkids playing Battleship, Uno, Rummy, flying Styrofoam airplanes, making rock soup, fishing, or just watching a movie. Walter was an avid reader of almost any genre but Westerns were always a favorite. Another hobby he had was woodworking, where he spent many an hour in his “Hide Out” producing garden and holiday dcor.
Walter is survived by his wife Florence, son Jeff and his wife Veronica (Munoz); Daughter Sheila and her husband Jay (Parker); Son Kevin; Grandchildren Jacob, Tyler (wife Katie), Jessica and Paige, one great- grandson Carter; Brothers John (Alma) , Ernest, Edward, Robert (Marge), Louis, Arnold, Donald (Pamela), Herman Jr (Jackie); One sister, Alvina. Sisters-in-law Ruth Blair and Betty Klink. One brother-in-law LaVern Laubscher. Numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Walter was proceeded in death by his parents, In-laws Otto and Lillie, sisters Minnie and Louise, one sister-in-law and five brothers-in-law.
