Warren Leslie Olson was born June 21, 1929, the son of Sherman and Hedwig Aebi Olson. He passed away at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at the age of eighty-two.
Warren was born in Waverly, Iowa, and baptized in Christ at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He received his education in the Denison Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1947. He attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, obtaining his Bachelors Degree in History and Political Science. Warren was united in marriage to Alice Warden on June 29, 1952, in Denver, Colorado. The couple was blessed with the birth of four children. He joined the United States Army on December 8, 1952, obtaining the rank of Sergeant and serving his country in the Korean War.
When Warren returned from the service in 1954, the couple moved to Denison, Iowa, joining Warrens family in running Olsons Bakery, a job they worked at for over 50 years, until their son Eric purchased the business. Warren and Alice opened Olsons Antique store in Denison in 1973 and operated that along with the bakery until they retired.
Warren was a Boy Scout, earning his Eagle Scout Award in 1945. He was the second person in Crawford County to achieve this, and was also honored as Crawford Countys oldest Eagle Scout. As a runner on the high school track team in the two-mile relay and the open 880, Warren helped his Denison track team win their first state championship in 1947. Warren enjoyed hunting pheasant, deer, coyotes, and going fishing, especially on his trips to Colorado. He authored articles in The Antique Trader and hunting and fishing articles for sporting magazines. Warren liked to collect antiques including coins, electrical insulators, golf clubs, and depression glass. In addition to the antique store, their collectibles were also displayed at monthly flea markets in the area. Warren was an avid golfer with a zero handicap and shot eight "holes in one" over his golf career. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison and the V.F.W.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Lee in infancy; one sister, Marilyn Ann in infancy; and his wife, Alice in 2006. He is survived by three daughters: Karen and her husband, Steve; Penny and her husband, Dale; Abby and her husband, Bob; and one son, Eric and his wife, Maureen; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; and 6 step-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
