William Albert Neumann was born on June 29, 1943, the son of Carl and Bertha (Thies) Neumann at the family farm near Denison, Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed his faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He attended Zion Lutheran School through eighth grade.
Bill was drafted into the United States Army on March 1, 1965 and served until his honorable discharge on March 1, 1967, having earned the rank of SP4. He received his marksman award during his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He then received his military police training at Fort Gordon, Georgia and transferred to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio where he was assigned a German Shephard named Tessie. They became very close and trained for many years together. He proudly obtained his GED while in the military.
William married Bethel "Beth" Hillhouse on September 3, 1967, at Zion Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. Carl Schmidt, in Denison. He loved farming, especially his cows. He started with his father's Hereford herd, later started replacing the Herefords with Charolais and ultimately took pride raising registered Simmentals and selling calves as breeding stock. After farming, he worked 15 years for Crawford County as a Secondary Road Maintenance driver, retiring in 2008.
He was a man of God. He loved fishing and hunting. Bill cherished his time with family. They spent over forty years traveling to Big Pine Lake in Perham, Minnesota, and over the years they welcomed their children and many grandchildren.
